Our Lady of Katyn
The portrait is a 30 cm x 45 cm polychrome bas relief depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the naked body of a murdered soldier shot in the back of the head and commemorates the tragedy of the Polish officers murdered in Katyń. The work is a replica of a carving by Tomasz Płatek. The original was consecrated by Pope John Paul II during the pilgrimage of the Katyń families in 1997. The archetype was thought to have been damaged during the Polish Air Force TU-154 crash in Smolensk on 10 April 2010. If was later discovered, however, that the bas relief was not on board the aircraft.
